South Terrace

South Terrace on any afternoon and the stage is set. The actors and bit players mill about you.

For a price of coffee you'll get the best seats in the house and you can settle back at your street café and watch the performance. It's very Freo.

The cast ensemble changes constantly. One minute you could be watching coiffeured young bucks strutting self-consciously past huddles of giggly teenage girls on the Cappuccino Strip.

The next minute, your attention is drawn to a table of raucous fishermen as they sip their coffees and chatter away in their mother tongue. As evening draws on, the scene changes again.

A sari-clad hippy unwinds with a friend dressed in gothic black and almost luminescent kabuki makeup. It's this rich mixture of tribes that gives this city its soul.

One community that has always thrived in Fremantle is the artists. Writers, actors, painters, musicians and craftspeople have found their inspiration here. Their influence spreads far and wide from the Old Customs House in the West End to the historic Fremantle Arts Centre and Museum.

Every year Fremantle celebrates its artistic flair with the Festival Fremantle. The 10 day program kicks off in November, with the colourful South Terrace Carnival and the Festival Parade. Festival Fremantle has traditionally been a festival by the people and for the people.

In all, there are more than 100 events on offer, so pick up a program here online, from major retail outlets, galleries and museums throughout the metropolitan area or any shop along the Cappuccino Strip.

To get there, you can catch the train, ride or drive.

There's ample parking at any of the 20 or so public carparks all within a short walk of the activities.

Be a part of Festival Fremantle this year. It's very Freo.
