Rottnest Island has some of the finest beaches and bays in the world together with a unique style of architecture dating back to the 1800's.

Rottnest is a popular holiday resort and place of recreation for Western Australians, visitors and tourists. The island is an A class reserve which is 11km long and 4.5km wide at is widest point.

Rottnest is well known for the quokkas, small animals, who wander about. All flora and fauna are protected on the island.

The island takes its name from the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh who discovered the island and called it 'rotte-nest' meaning rats nest, mistaking the quokkas for rats.

The Aboriginal Noongaro name for Rottnest Island is Wadjemup. Many areas of the island have great aboriginal significance. These areas are sign-posted and visitors are asked to respect these areas.

Rottnest is most popular during the summer months. Accommodation rates in winter are much lower than during the summer months.

The island has:

  • A Visitor and Information centre
  • Bus tours
  • Bayseeker bus to drop you at some of the most beautiful bays on the island.
