Exhibition
Fertile Soil: 50 Years of the City of Fremantle Art Collection is the title of an exhibition currently in development which marks a significant cultural milestone for the largest municipal art collection in Western Australia. From the seeds of the original donation of 41 paintings by Sir Claude Hotchin in1958, Fremantle’s art collection has largely grown from the exhibition and Artist in Residence program of the Fremantle Arts Centre, which has been a ‘hotbed’ for visual arts in the port city since 1973.

The exhibition will highlight the work of twenty two Western Australian practitioners who have lived and worked in Fremantle and made an important contribution to the visual arts culture of the city. The exhibition will include examples of contemporary Western Australian art spanning three decades and represent the strengths of the collection in painting, print, drawing, assemblage and ceramics. From the realism of Marcus Beilby and George Haynes to the fine ceramic craft of Sandra Black and Pippin Drysdale and formal clarity of Trevor Richards, Helen Smith and Jurek Wybraniec the show contains a contrasting selection of early and new works acquired over the last thirty years.

A unique and groundbreaking element of the exhibition will be an electronic audio exhibition guide. This interpretive guide will be available to exhibition visitors of all ages, enabling access to the voice of the artist speaking about their work. The touring exhibition will be managed by Art on the Move and be presented with an illustrated book and an informative exhibition brochure. The exhibition reveals the scale and quality of art held in the collection which encompasses a range of artistic statements about Fremantle, and provides a significant cultural resource for the community.
