Shed Your Car Day

The conduct of an annual Car Free Day provides an opportunity to encourage residents and workers to use green transport modes thereby reducing pollution, reducing parking demand, reducing the risk of accidents and improving environmental quality. By hosting a car free day, known as Shed Your Car Day, the City of Fremantle has served as a model for other Australian towns and cities.

The car-free day is already an annual event in many countries around the world. On 21 and 22 September every year, cities and towns throughout Europe hold an In Town Without My Car day. Many other cities, including Bogota in Colombia, Boulder in Colorado USA and Tokyo, Japan, also regularly host car-free days.

Shed Your Car Day has been held in Fremantle on 29 November 2000, 19 September 2001 and 9 May 2002.

Objectives

The mission statement for Shed Your Car Day is:

"Shed Your Car Day in Fremantle will encourage people to get to and around Fremantle without a car, in order to promote the environmental, health and social benefits of reduced car use in the community."

The objectives of Shed Your Car Day are to:

encourage behaviour change towards reduced car use;

increase awareness of environmental issues such as air pollution, noise pollution and congestion caused by the use of private cars;

recognise the health benefits of walking and cycling;

create more space for people walking and cycling;

encourage people to experience available public transport options;

encourage a greater “sense of community” and safety within Fremantle;

demonstrate the benefit to business of reduced car traffic in Fremantle;

support the City of Fremantle City Plan objective for a sustainable city and

support and encourage other communities to recognise the benefits of similar events.

In order to qualify as a genuine car free day, a section of the Fremantle city centre is closed to private cars for the day.

Evaluation of Shed Your Car Day

An important component of Shed Your Car Day is the conduct of research to assess and evaluate whether the event meets its objectives. A number of surveys were carried out including an intercept survey, and observation survey, air pollution monitoring, workplace challenge survey, car park occupancy survey and bus patronage data. The results of these surveys are summarised in the attached research report

Evaluation reports for the 2000, 2001 and 2002 events and can be viewed.....
