Mayor Says Artillery Barracks Not Viable For City

Mayor Peter Tagliaferri has met with Premier Geoff Gallop and told him that vesting the Fremantle Artillery Barracks in the City of Fremantle does not stack up.

Consultants Ernst and Young have produced a feasibility study commissioned by the Commonwealth, WA Governments and the City of Fremantle.

The report failed to identify any viable options consistent with the funding partners’ key principles, including heritage conservation and retention of the Army Museum on site.

Mayor Tagliaferri has stated that he will not support the vesting proposal when it comes before Council.

“I have made it abundantly clear throughout that the City will not be putting its hand in its pocket to prop up a non-viable site,” said the Mayor.

“I think the WA Government’s offer to kick in $2.5 million to use the married quarters for public housing is a great idea, but this option was analysed by the consultants and would leave our ratepayers out of pocket by more than $2 million for the whole site over the 20 year period”

Mayor Tagliaferri said the City’s Chief Executive Officer Ray Glickman would report to Council in the near future but he was ninety nine per cent sure the City would not buy into it.

He said it was disappointing that the City could not play a part in ensuring the Army Museum’s future on this important heritage site, but that he hoped the Commonwealth Government with its huge resource base would be able to dig deeper to solve the problem.
