Sustainability at City of Fremantle

Fremantle residents have a reputation for a number of things, including a responsible attitude towards the environment. This attitude is reflected in the actions of the City of Fremantle. Some of the actions that the City has taken to protect the environment and demonstrate leadership include:

  • Being the first carbon neutral local government in Western Australia
  • Retrofitting a heritage listed, sustainable house
  • Being a founding partner of ICLEI Australia
  • Being the first local government to support a CAT bus, outside of the Perth CBD
  • Helping to establish the award winning Living Smart program
  • Sending our community’s waste the South Metropolitan Regional Council’s (SMRC) Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC), to divert waste from landfill and save greenhouse gas emissions
  • The SMRC’s ClimateWiseTM program
  • Renovating the first heritage listed sustainable demonstration building in the state
  • Installing the state’s largest solar farm at the Fremantle Leisure centre

The City of Fremantle is committed to incorporating sustainability principles into our decision-making and operational processes. It is this incorporation of sustainability into all of our activities that has rewarded the City of Fremantle with awards from the Western Australian Environment Award 2002 for the Government Leading by Example category, finalists in the Banksia Awards 2003 for the Government Leading by Example and Adult Learners Award for Outstanding Environmental Care Program (for Living Smart) in 2003. We plan to continue on this leading edge path for the benefit of the community and the environment.
