Overview
The Fremantle Community Precinct System is at the heart of a program of community consultation and participation developed by the Fremantle City Council. The aim of the Community Precinct System is to foster discussion between members of the community, council officers and Fremantle councillors on matters that affect our community, and our local areas. These discussions, we hope, will improve Council decision-making, give residents a sense of ownership over their 'patch', build some relationships between people in our community, and generally strengthen our community. The matters discussed are often eventually the subjects of decisions by Fremantle Council
What Do Precincts Do?
Community Precincts hold monthly meetings where they discuss what is happening in their local area or in other areas of Fremantle (eg the CBD, or the Fishing Boat Harbour). The Council sends information to Community Precincts for use in their discussions: Development applications, strategic plans, policies, budget information, and so on. Precincts send Council their requests for information or action by Council officers, and their recommendations on the matters under discussion for consideration by Council.
Precincts may also take independent action: organising community events such as street clean-ups, walks, workshops, or cross-precinct activities.
By attending Precinct meetings, people have the opportunity to influence council decisions, as well as work towards making their community a better place to live.
How are Precincts funded?
Precincts are given administrative and financial assistance by the City of Fremantle: (Precincts are allocated a budget to assist with photocopying, postage and like expenses, can apply for funding for a community project or minor capital works in their area. Funding is available under the Precinct Community Discretionary Expenditure Fund). View the application form and guidelines.
The main point of contact between the Council and the Precincts is the Precinct Coordinator whose role is to liaise with Precincts, and ensure there is a smooth information flow between Council, Council officers and the Precincts.
