Weeding out the problem: Friends of Booyeembara Park need your help
11 Sep 2007
DO YOU feel the need? The need to weed…? Then the City of Fremantle and Friends of Booyeembara Park want to hear from you.
They are calling on people to join them from 9.30am to midday on Sunday, September 23, to help weed around the plants put in place during winter at Booyeembara Park.
City of Fremantle Parks and Environmental Projects Officer Dave Jamieson described it as an important community activity, ensuring the longevity of the new plantings.
“With continued vigilance we can make a difference to ensure the next generation enjoys the wonderful native plant life on show in the park,” he said.
“Events such as this help to deliver an understanding that communities are vital in changing attitudes towards environmental issues.
“It’s all part of the ‘think global, act local’ philosophy and we encourage volunteers to come along and get involved.
“And as a small token of appreciation, refreshments will be provided for all volunteers.”
The weeding will take place at the Booyeembara Park amphitheatre and storytelling circle – access is from Stevens Street (across from Nannine Avenue) or Montreal Street (near the golf driving range).
Volunteers are advised to bring a hat, gloves, water and wear suitable clothing such as sturdy, closed footwear.
Last year, Booyeembara Park took out top honours in three categories of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects WA awards, recognising its major rejuvenation over the past few years.
Formerly called the Montreal Open Space Park, the name Booyeembara was chosen to reflect Aboriginal heritage – it is a Nyoongar word meaning “of the limestone hills”.
