Survey on Victoria Quay development: the results are in

02 Oct 2007
A CITY of Fremantle survey of residents' attitudes towards the proposed ING commercial development at Victoria Quay is now complete - with opinion fairly evenly divided among the community.

Sent to a sample of 4000 households, 742 residents (18.6 per cent) chose to respond with 49 per cent supporting the development and 47 per cent opposing it.

City of Fremantle CEO Graeme Mackenzie said there were strong concerns relating to the design of the proposed development among both supporters and opponents.

“Their particular concerns were the look, height and how it will fit in overall with the existing character of the local area,” he said.

“Many of those surveyed also considered it ‘essential’ or ‘very important’ that the development complies with the Fremantle Waterfront Masterplan.

“Greater support generally came from those living furtherer away from Victoria Quay and people who visited the Fremantle CBD less frequently.

“Reasons for supporting the development largely centred on the positive social and economic impacts, making better use of an under-utilised space, rather than the structure itself.

“This research, along with results from other public consultation and the planning assessment of the proposal, will be used to assist council in making a recommendation to the WA Planning Commission when it considers the application.”

Mr Mackenzie said these processes were vital in ensuring the planning, heritage and economic aspects of the development would be of benefit to Fremantle as a whole.

“This is something that has engaged the whole community and is, by nature, a complex development which means many important factors will be taken into account before a decision is made,” he said.
