Plant a tree for mum this Mother's Day at Booyeembara Park
28 Apr 2008
HEAD to Booyeembara Park in White Gum Valley this Mother's Day, May 11, and plant a tree in memory of your mum between 9am and 1pm.
Established in 2002, Trees for Mum is a free, nationwide event that gives children of all ages a chance to celebrate their mother’s lives by planting a tree in their honour while helping the environment at the same time.
Trees For Mum founders Deena Raphael and Lauren Adlam created the annual occasion as a way to remember their own mothers, who both died of cancer.
“What began as a way for us to remember our mums on Mother’s Day has grown into a national celebration of all mothers,” Ms Raphael said.
“For those whose mums have died, it’s a chance to remember – and for those blessed to have a living mum, planting a tree is a lovely gesture and a great experience to share with family and friends.”
Planet Ark and National Tree Day founder Jon Dee said there were two key benefits from taking part in Trees for Mum.
“Nurturing a seedling and watching it grow is a great way to acknowledge the effort that your mum put into nurturing you,” he said.
“Planting a tree for your mum on Mother’s Day is also a great way to create a safer environment for Australia’s kids, a goal that all mothers would support.”
Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri added: “It’s a positive way to celebrate a life and establish a memorial on what can be a difficult day.”
Trees for Mum at Booyeembara Park is hosted by the City of Fremantle – free trees will be provided on the day for planting. About 500 plants, including groundcovers, shrubs and trees, are expected to be planted in the park.
Entrance to the park is off Stevens Street, opposite Fisher Street, in White Gum Valley. While registration is not required, expressions of interest to 0410 466 063 or e-mail pamw@fremantle.wa.gov.au beforehand is appreciated.
