Addition author Toni Jordan a major plus for Fremantle City Library
08 Apr 2008
POPULAR debut novelist Toni Jordan comes to Fremantle City Library on April 28 to talk about her book Addition, described as 'a stylish, witty and moving love story'.
It’s a chance to hear Jordan discuss her novel and engage in a question-and-answer session with the author, who will also be signing copies of her book.
Addition focuses on the quick-witted, flirtatious and headstrong Grace Vandenburg who has an unhealthy obsession with numbers but then loses count of the number of ways to fall in love.
Born in Brisbane in 1966, Jordan graduated from the University of Queensland with a bachelor of science and then worked as a sales assistant, molecular biologist, quality control chemist and marketing manager.
Following an early mid-life crisis, she left her job in the vitamin industry and enrolled in RMIT University’s professional writing and editing course with the idea of starting her own writing business.
Needing one more subject, Jordan chose “novel” as an option and, in 2006, won a Varuna Awards master class to develop Addition.
Since then, the rights for Addition have been sold to nine countries, including the US and UK, Italy, Germany, France, Portugal, Israel, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
“Toni’s visit to Fremantle is an opportunity for people to really connect with the author and gain an insight into the thought processes behind her writing and discover how she found her own literary voice,” Fremantle City Library adult librarian Robin Smith said.
The event is part of The Sunday Times Big Book Club, which aims to promote a love of reading while supporting Australian authors by bringing them together with libraries, communities and booksellers.
“This is another chance to engage people with books, perhaps getting them to embrace a choice they may otherwise not look at,” Ms Smith said.
The free Fremantle event, including morning tea, is from 10.30am to midday, Monday, April 28, in the Fremantle City Library at 8 William Street. Bookings are essential; call 9432 9766 or e-mail frelib@fremantle.wa.gov.au.
