Survey first step in redeveloping landfill site
11 Mar 2010
THE City of Fremantle plans to redevelop the former South Fremantle Landfill Site (the Site) and has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Landcorp to facilitate the investigation, remediation and proposed redevelopment of the Site.
In order to ensure the safe and sustainable use of the Site in the long term, and to safeguard the health and well-being of the community in the surrounding area, the City of Fremantle will commission a landfill gas survey across the Site.
This is to inform you the project will start during the week commencing Monday, March 15, 2010, and the City reassures you it will proceed with negligible impact to residents.
Contractors have been engaged to perform the landfill gas survey who utilise recognised international methods for landfill gas evaluation that are acceptable to the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and the Department of Health (DoH).
The process will involve soil vapour probes being inserted into the ground across the Site by direct push probing – this technique has been selected as it prevents airborne dust generation.
A four-wheel-drive mounted rig will be used to perform the probing process and noise disturbance will be kept to a minimum as the rig is powered by a small generator.
Probes will be inserted into the ground only during day-time hours, and not before 7am. It is anticipated that the survey may take around six to eight weeks to complete.
