Here's the go… be in the know and think retro at The Meeting Place

18 Jul 2008
WITH ever-rising energy bills stretching the family budget, The Meeting Place in South Fremantle has several solutions at hand.

Starting August 2, a four-week course will cover different ways to retrofit existing homes to maximise energy and water savings.

“Passive solar design measures such as insulation, solar panels for electricity production and grey-water systems are all options we can now choose to create more sustainable households and lifestyles,” The Meeting Place program officer Kathy Ings said.

“By retrofitting an existing home or, if you’re about to build a new home, it’s a good way of becoming more comfortable by reducing heat loss in winter and keeping cooler in summer.

“It also helps to improve the environment, save money on energy bills and it’s a great example for the rest of your neighbourhood.”

The workshops will explain how retrofitting additions can be incorporated into any home to make them more energy and water efficient.

“There will also be information on eligibility and how to apply for government rebates,” Ms Ings said.

Topics over the four-week course, held each Saturday, include:
• August 2: The Principles of Passive Solar Design.
• August 9: Choosing Appropriate Retrofitting Options.
• August 16: Choosing a Solar Hot Water System and Solar Panels.
• August 23: Basic Water-wise Landscaping for Thermal Comfort.

A small fee applies for the courses; bookings are essential – call 9335 3394 to reserve a place or to get more information.

The Meeting Place is located at 245 South Terrace, South Fremantle.
