Lest we forget: Remembrance Day to honour the fallen at Monument Hill
01 Nov 2007
ON Sunday, November 11, the City of Fremantle will recognise Remembrance Day at the Monument Hill Memorial Reserve, acknowledging the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I.
“At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns went silent across the battlefields of Europe,” Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri said.
“Remembrance Day is a chance to remember those who died in World War I, as well as the numerous other wars and conflicts since then.
“Australians cemented their reputation as courageous and honourable soldiers in World War I and generations of service personnel have since followed in the traditions of those original Anzacs.
“Remembrance Day is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the servicemen and women who gave their lives fighting for the values we continue to uphold to this day.
“Many of them may now be gone but they will never be forgotten, as they put themselves on the line for the sake of generations that followed.”
Mayor Tagliaferri and councillors are encouraging the general public to attend this year’s Remembrance Day Memorial Service at Monument Hill.
Last year, an estimated crowd of 350 to 400 attended to remember those who paid the ultimate price for their country.
Assembly is at 10.45am for a prompt start at 11am. Monument Hill Memorial Reserve is located on High Street, Fremantle.
