Pint-sized Picasso paints poster pleaser for Children's Fiesta

27 Feb 2008
TEN-year-old Hannah Thomter proved to be a pint-sized Picasso in this year's Children's Fiesta poster competition, scoring herself first prize.

The East Fremantle Primary School student’s discerning palette captured the theme of “kids partying in the bush” to tie in with the bushland setting of Samson Park, the fiesta venue.

As winner, Hannah scored a $75 Dymocks voucher, a two-hour crocodile pool party at the Fremantle Leisure Centre for 10 people and a framed copy of the poster.

Eight-year-old Madi Guidone from Our Lady of Mount Carmel School won second prize, a $50 Dymocks voucher, while six-year-old Hilton Primary School student Emily Bromley received third prize, a $25 Dymocks voucher.

After the opinions of judges Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri, Fremantle Arts Centre director Jim Cathcart and Dymocks store manager Clive Klicker were canvassed, Hannah’s entry was chosen as the ultimate winner for its colourful nature while evoking many aspects of Samson Park.

“Hannah’s come up with a delightful poster design that really highlights what the Children’s Fiesta is all about,” Mayor Tagliaferri said.

“She’s managed to capture the wonderful tuart trees in Samson Park with kids hiding behind them in a playful way, the Aboriginal connection to the area and the fact it’s also a historic place.

“Colour has also been used in a bold and expressive way, so when you put it all together, Hannah’s entry had all the right elements.”

Hannah confessed that art was one of her favourite subjects at East Fremantle Primary School, which lies just within the City of Fremantle’s boundaries.

“I was sort of thinking about the bush as I did the poster,” she said. “The tall trees at our school reminded me of the trees in Samson Park.”

The 2008 Fremantle Children’s Fiesta is a City of Fremantle initiative, supported by community groups and local schools, at Samson Park from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, April 13.

The event features a variety of entertainment on the main stage, performances and exhibitions at different sites, community art, children’s activities and stalls from community service organisations, schools and parents and citizens’ groups.

Samson Park is located on McCombe Avenue in Samson with many tall trees providing an abundance of shade.
