Step into the breach and help Port Beach: special Coastcare day

25 Sep 2007
HERE'S a chance to make a splash for the environment at Fremantle's Port Beach from 9am, Sunday, October 7.

The City of Fremantle, Coastcare and Conservation Volunteers Australia are calling for people to help with weeding and ongoing maintenance to help protect the sand dunes.

“Dune systems along the coast can be quite fragile and planting native species helps to stabilise areas of bare or damaged sand dune, preventing further erosion,” City of Fremantle Parks & Environmental Projects Officer Dave Jamieson said.

“The plants help to trap sand and windblown seed and, as they naturally break down, they provide nutrients to the growing plants.

“This weeding and maintenance program follows on from our planting day in July to ensure the new plantings continue to thrive and prosper.

“Volunteering to support local environmental projects is rewarding for both the volunteer and the local community – and the good news is that everyone who helps will be rewarded with a morning tea.”

People interested in taking part should meet at the Sandtrax Beach car park, 300m south of the Oyster Bar Cafe, Port Beach, from 9am, Sunday, October 7.

For more details and registration, call South Metropolitan Coastcare Officer Craig Wilson on 9439 0433 or Dave Jamieson at the City of Fremantle on 9432 9814.
