Thoughts wanted on Fremantle Markets Draft Conservation Plan
15 Oct 2007
THE City of Fremantle is calling for people to have their say on the draft conservation plan for the Fremantle Markets.
Kelsall Binet Architects were commissioned by the city to prepare the conservation plan, done in accordance with Heritage Council of WA guidelines.
City of Fremantle Heritage Architect Agnieshka Kiera said the plan is the first step in planning any subsequent upgrading of the markets, helping to identify essential restoration works.
“Conservation plans collect and analyse historic documents and record the current physical state of buildings to determine what makes them of cultural heritage significance,” she said.
“This way we can see how buildings can best be conserved and managed for the enjoyment of the community and future generations.
“The prime aim is to investigate and determine the cultural significance by analysing the historical and physical evidence of the site.
“From this, conservation policies will be recommended while looking at how building interiors and external service areas can best be improved.
“The challenge is in knowing how to plan and complete any upgrading works in a compatible manner, ensuring they won’t detract from the significance of the markets.
“We want to improve its use and enhance its appreciation for all who use the Fremantle Markets, which is why this public comment period is so important.”
A hard copy of the draft plan can be viewed in the Local History Collection of Fremantle City Library. Alternatively, click HERE to download a copy.
Closing date for comments is November 28 – send to Agnieshka Kiera, City of Fremantle, PO Box 807, Fremantle WA 6959, fax 9432 9842 or e-mail planning@fremantle.wa.gov.au.
