Happy harmonious happenings in Fremantle's Kings Square

11 Mar 2008
HARMONY Week 2008 comes to the Fremantle Village Art Market in Kings Square on Thursday, March 20, from 10am to 6pm.

It’s an international celebration of cultural diversity, coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

“Through the theme of connecting, the celebration of harmony in our community encourages people to take a stand against racism,” City of Fremantle Community Development Officer Leigh McGowan said.

“It helps to build a peaceful, productive future and make the most of racial, cultural, social and religious diversity.

“This event promises to be a fantastic opportunity to interact and engage with people from all walks of life.”

It all starts with Marie Taylor’s welcome to country and Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri’s official launch at midday, followed by acoustic guitar duo Zero Tolerance in the afternoon.

Local primary school students will have mosaic art work displayed on tree pots surrounding the market area, highlighting what harmony means to them.

Boyz Can Dance 2, a group of indigenous young men that train at Fremantle PCYC in Hilton, bust the best moves as they mix traditional cultural dance with hip hop.

Tai chi workshops with Andrew Lim and a drumming circle – open to anyone – will also give people the chance to learn new skills in a fun and supportive environment.

All the regular craft, clothing and food stalls will be on hand, as well as special information stalls.

“This colourful event is a celebration of our connectedness across diversities,” Ms McGowan said. “Fremantle is internationally-renowned for its differences in our culturally rich community, making Harmony Week a special event for us all.”
