Fremantle disillusioned by energy price hikes

28 Aug 2007
FREMANTLE City Council has condemned Synergy's recent price increases for SmartPower and NaturalPower customers as a failure to encourage users to reduce energy consumption and use renewable sources.

Mayor Peter Tagliaferri was responding to Synergy’s 25% and 8% increases respectively, that were announced earlier this month for customers of the two Synergy power plans.

SmartPower and NaturalPower are strategies offering reduced rates for off-peak power consumption and for using natural power sources.

The Mayor said he was reflecting the views of many Fremantle residents when he said he was disappointed by Synergy and the State Government which has defended the increases.

“Here we are applauding our 321 GreenPower households and holding them up as an example to encourage others to switch to more environmentally friendly energy sources,” the Mayor said.

“We’ve even gone to the extent of setting a target to have 80% of households on GreenPower by 2010 to help Australia meet its Kyoto target.

“We are disillusioned by the State Government’s support for a move that takes away some of the incentives people had to do the right thing for the environment.”

The City of Fremantle estimates it saves more than 1600 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year by buying greener forms of energy.
