Ringing in the new: fresh faces on Fremantle City Council
21 Oct 2007
FOLLOWING the October 20 election, the City of Fremantle has four new faces on council and two current councillors who have been re-elected.
Six councillor positions were filled across the municipality’s various wards:
• Following the retirement of councillor Bob Williams, Robert Fittock was elected unopposed in North Ward.
• Donna Haney will fill the City Ward seat left vacant by retiring councillor Steve Gorman.
• Georgie Adeane is the new South Ward councillor, taking over from Geoff Graham, while Bill Massie takes over from Bob Smith in Hilton Ward.
• Veteran councillors John Alberti and John Dowson both retained their positions in Beaconsfield Ward and East Ward respectively.
All will serve a four-year term on council, expiring October 15, 2011. A council meeting will be held at 6pm, Wednesday, October 24, to swear-in the new council, appoint them to various City of Fremantle committees and elect the deputy mayor.
Half the council is re-elected every two years with councillors and mayor serving a four-year term. Current councillors Doug Thompson, Jon Strachan, Les Lauder, Alice King, Shirley Mackay and Brad Pettitt and mayor Peter Tagliaferri were elected in 2005 and serve until October, 2009.
Mayor Tagliaferri said he was looking forward to working with fresh faces on council and thanked previous councillors for their hard work and contribution.
“I am confident this new-look council will move forward as a team, continue to listen to our community and work to satisfy its needs,” he said.
“As a growing city, Fremantle faces many changes while it maintains its important links to the past – and this needs strong leadership and a council made up of elected members not afraid to make decisions.
“Looking at the councillors whom I have been elected to work with, I am struck by the diversity of opinion and talents they represent.
“I am looking forward to heading such an interesting council and guiding it so that all views are fairly represented and accorded due respect and status.”
