Fremantle Celebrates Earth Hour - Event at Parmelia Park 6pm-9pm March 29
25 Mar 2008
On the evening of March 29, Fremantle residents can join people from more than 20 cities around the world to participate in Earth Hour.
Earth Hour (www.earthhour.org) began in 2007 as a Sydney event to highlight how people can make a difference to climate change. With increasing evidence of global warming, it has become a global movement.
The initiative, coordinated by the World Wildlife Fund, calls on individuals and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 29, between 8pm and 9pm.
In Fremantle, resident Kali Balint raised the possibility a local event with the City of Fremantle and the city enthusiastically embraced the idea. A family picnic event is now planned for the evening of March 29 to celebrate Earth Hour, supported by the City of Fremantle.
“We were going to have some local families get together in the Gold Street Park but the response was so great we had to move it to a much larger venue,” Mr Balint said.
The Fremantle event will be held in Parmelia Park, South Fremantle, on Saturday, March 29, from 6pm to 9pm. The event is a family picnic; there will be a stage with musical entertainment and a scattering of stalls from companies operating in the “green” market. At 8pm, all lights will be turned off for one hour.
Solar power, from the Friends of Booyeembara Park’s solar trailer, will provide enough energy to allow the on-stage entertainment to continue. The solar trailer will be used to power the on-stage PA system throughout the event.
To encourage the sustainability of the event, organisers are encouraging families to walk, cycle or car pool to the picnic, bring food and drink with less packaging, to register their household for Earth Hour and to ensure lights and appliances are turned off at home.
To register for Earth Hour go to www.earthhour.org. For information about the Fremantle event, contact City of Fremantle Sustainability Officer Isabella Jennings on 9432 9735.
