Road closures on Queen Street: important drainage works start June 19
30 May 2007
IMPORTANT drainage works will begin on June 19, taking advantage of the Fremantle CBD's quieter time of year to reduce inconvenience to businesses, workers, students and visitors to the port city.
Due to underground service concerns, the order of construction has been changed – the first stage of drainage works will now begin at the Queen Street-Cantonment Street roundabout.
Road closures will be in place along the westbound lane of Queen Street, between Adelaide and Phillimore Streets. Partial road closures may also occur along Cantonment Street (between Market and Queen Streets).
Starting in July, the second stage of drainage works will take place along the westbound lane of Queen Street, between Phillimore and Cantonment Streets. One lane of traffic will be closed to allow for the installation of large drainage lines and soakwells.
The scheduled drainage works have the potential to be linked to the Water Corporation’s proposed main drain improvement works in affected CBD areas and this will result in improved storm water management.
The City of Fremantle is calling on people to show patience while works are in progress and urges all drivers to consider alternate routes wherever possible.
Commuters should regularly check with Transperth to keep abreast of any temporary changes as the works progress via www.transperth.wa.gov.au.
The overall timetable of works remains the same; the stages of works have been swapped over for construction feasibility, as outlined below (night works may also occur during the construction period):
STAGE ONE – JUNE 19 INTERSECTION OF QUEEN & CANTONMENT STREETS
* The proposed works in Stage One will generally impact on the intersection of Queen and Cantonment Streets near the roundabout. These works involve the installation of drainage facilities, mainly through open-trench excavation.
* Traffic control measures will be in place and the westbound lane of this section of Queen Street will be CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC.
* Additional restrictions will occur at the Cantonment-Queen Street roundabout, where traffic movements will be limited. Further one-lane closures of Queen Street (Cantonment Street to Adelaide Street) and Cantonment Street (Market Street to Queen Street) may occur to enable some works.
* BUS STOPS WILL BE CLOSED – inbound bus stops on Queen Street (outside the ANZ Bank) and Adelaide Street (outside the old Ross’s site) will NOT be available. Buses will detour along Queen Victoria and Parry Streets (for Adelaide Street routes) and Parry Street (for High Street routes) to the railway station.
BUS ROUTES AFFECTED: Route Numbers – 70, 99, 103, 104, 106, 107, 111, 142, 146, 147, 148, 154, 155, 158, 381. School Services – 516, 701, 703, 705, 832, 836.
* Traffic congestion is likely to occur, as motorists change driving patterns – please consider alternate routes or use public transport.
STAGE TWO – JULY QUEEN STREET (between Phillimore & Cantonment Streets)
* The proposed works in Stage Two will generally impact on the northern part of Queen Street between the Phillimore Street and Cantonment Street intersections.
* Traffic control measures will be in place, under the same traffic management restrictions as described above with the same bus routes affected.
Please note: all dates provided above are based on conducive construction and weather conditions and are therefore subject to minor changes.
