Success: Freo fireworks another 'cracker night' says Mayor
27 Jan 2008
THE second annual Cicerello's Fremantle Cracker Night has proven to be a success for the port city, attracting crowds estimated at 60,000 to 70,000.
Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri said the figures were given to him by police and security for the evening, reflecting the numerous vantage points in and around Fremantle.
“I’ve read some reports where people say there were only 6000 and numbers were down but this wasn’t the case at all,” he said.
“There were about 6000 people at Fremantle Esplanade alone but people took advantage of numerous other vantage points at Monument Hill, Bathers Beach and South Beach, to name just a few.
“So when you add up all the locations where people gathered, you get a true picture of the tens of thousands of people who were in different Fremantle locations to enjoy the cracker night.
“And I’m pleased to say that no arrests were made, highlighting Fremantle’s family-friendly feel we wanted to ensure as part of this event.
“I had reports that numerous people came up from Mandurah, Rockingham and Kwinana because Fremantle had the closest fireworks to their area.
“Australia Day has always been about the relaxed Aussie lifestyle and Cicerello’s Fremantle Cracker Night was simply our way of giving the community another choice.”
