Update on Fremantle Leisure Centre: pools to remain open

FURTHER to Tuesday’s announcement, most swimming pools at the Fremantle Leisure Centre will now remain open, despite previous information from AlintaGas indicating a 100 per cent shutdown of the gas supply.

Further discussion with AlintaGas has resulted in their representatives requesting swimming pool operators only reduce gas consumption to a minimum level, without affecting health and safety.

Fremantle Leisure Centre coordinator John East said the water temperature of the pools was being lowered 1-2 degrees Celsius to meet with this request while the playground pool would close for the time being.

“The centre will continue to operate and deliver services as normal, except for the remaining three weeks of Term 2’s Learn to Swim program,” he said.

“The situation is being continuously assessed and monitored with contingency plans place to respond as required, as WA’s gas crisis continues to unfold.”

City of Fremantle management is currently working with its human resources department to develop support plans for possible re-deployment of staff across the ogranisation, should the situation change in the future.
