Message from the Mayor

It is with the utmost pleasure that I welcome you to the City of Fremantle and I truly hope you will immerse yourself in the experience of WA’s famed port city.

You have to experience the many different facets of this diverse multicultural city to fully understand its vibrant nature… the different sights, sounds and smells that all go together to form this amazing melting pot.

Fremantle is easy to explore by foot – it is the ideal way to acquaint yourself with the dynamic mix of cafes, pubs, heritage buildings, shopping outlets, tourist attractions and the relaxing maritime atmosphere of our city.

Fremantle is also a thriving fishing port where the air is filled with chatter in a variety of languages. A walk along the boardwalks and jetties at the waterfront allows you to take in the smell of the sea air and the freshly-caught fish being hauled ashore.

A stroll around the city brings you face to face with Fremantle’s heritage and the many buildings and structures put up by the early settlers. There is an abundance of public buildings and churches that feature all around the city, particularly in the West End area.

The early European influence is noticeable in Fremantle’s cafe culture, most obvious on the Cappuccino Strip (a section of South Terrace in the heart of the city) where a plethora of cafes offer a wide range of coffee styles and cuisine.

The colour and vibrancy for which Fremantle is renowned is evident on the streets of the city, where you can see a wide cross-section of people. Fremantle is widely-known for the diversity of its local residents. Over the years, it has attracted many artistic and creative people, intellectuals and alternative thinkers.

Culturally, Fremantle is a hub of activity. At any given moment you can find exhibitions scattered throughout the city, along with musical performances, theatre, buskers and public art.

Whether you want to sip a on the cappuccino strip, observe the passing parade of cosmopolitan characters, sample the local cuisine, or energetically dance the night away to a live band, I urge you to make the most of your time here.

No experience of Fremantle would be complete without taking in the sunsets for which Western Australia is famous. Watching the sun change into an orange fireball and slowly dipping into the ocean from a vantage point such as Bathers Beach is a fitting end to the day.

We hope when you leave our city you will remember Fremantle fondly and return to visit us in the future.

Peter Tagliaferri
Mayor of Fremantle.
