When I arrived in Fremantle twenty five years ago I knew this was somewhere special and this was the end of my nomadic life. Sixteen years down the track I moved into the former JD Cockells Stables in South Fremantle and found a strong sense of community and a place I now love to call home.
I became interested in civic matters through my desire to see Council do the right thing by the Community when considering the future of the old South Fremantle Tip site. This interest was bolstered by participation in the Precinct System with the South Fremantle Precinct Group. I soon found myself speaking out more and more on local issues. With encouragement from my local community, I stood for South Ward in the 2005 elections. I’m pleased to say I won that election with a majority not seen in South ward for many years.
As I write this in October 2005 I’m still very much a new kid on the block, having been on Council for five months. It’s been a very busy five months and I have embraced the steep learning curve with relish. My role on Council is broad based, and I’m committed to good governance across Fremantle. My responsibilities include Deputy Chair of the Planning Services Committee, Fremantle Council’s representative to Western Australian Local Government Association and membership of five Community Advisory committees and Working groups ranging from Arts to Transport via Property portfolio management.
