I first got onto Council so I would have an excuse to stay out at nights and not help my wife put our five children to bed. I have been on Council since 1988, have successfully fought five elections and came last in one Mayoral election. I am still not sure why I got onto Council in the first place and even less sure of what keeps me here at times except after all these years I think I am pretty good at it .I could tell you all the really important things I do and the committees I have sat on, chaired etc over the years but with all the changes if might not make much sense to you. However the most important committee I sit on in a global or regional sense is the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council which I have sat of for the last six years. This Council aims to recycle 80 to 90 percent of Fremantle’s rubbish and if I have an area of specialisation it is rubbish and recycling
I stay on Council because someone has to keep an eye on the CEO and the Senior officers and if people like me were not here you probably would not have anything to do. I think I have a sense of humour - so does my 13 year old daughter. Also in the little time I have to spare from single-handedly trying to keep the City of Fremantle on track I work as a lecturer for Challenger TAFE and run the Health and Fitness and Natural Therapies courses at the Beaconsfield Campus, I am 53, bald, and try and cycle everywhere, (if I don't all those late night meetings followed by late dinners stack on the weight). I guess you could call me faintly green although my other bike is a gas driven four wheel drive so I live with the contradictions.
