Culture and Recreation

Cultural Development

What makes Fremantle the place we call “Freo” is how we express ourselves daily as a community. Culture is in the things we do everyday, the films we watch, the sport we play, and how we live together as a community with diverse backgrounds and interests. It is also about how we understand and celebrate our identity. It is important to make sure that all of Council’s programs are sensitive to our cultural aspirations. The Cultural Development Coordinator is guided by Council’s Cultural Policy and Plan and works to ensure that creative celebrations of culture are part of our City experience.

Festivals and Special Events

A city that doesn’t know how to play and celebrate itself would be a very dull city indeed. Festivals and special events bring Fremantle alive with the daring, the divine and the downright crazy. Our Festivals and Special Events Coordinator puts together arrange of events throughout the year that express the unique character or Fremantle – with local people taking the lead role. There are many ways you can get involved, as a volunteer, participant or initiator of an event, and your ideas are always welcome. International Relations

As a port city, on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Fremantle has long been the western gateway to Australia. The city celebrates its diversity and heritage through international cultural and economic exchanges, under Council’s Sister City programme. Many of our ties with other cities spring from the close family connections between the citizens of Fremantle and our sister cities in Italy, Portugal, Malaysia, Japan and our friendship cities in Indonesia and Croatia.
